All Hail Breaks Loose

One of the best things about where I live is the climatic weather. You never know what the day is going to bring. When I checked the weather tonight before settling in for the nightly movie, the weatherman (who by the way is a celebrity around here) said there was little chance for storms in our area. About an hour ago I started to see lightening. Then I heard an unusual sound off in the distance. . .I listened closer and thought it sounded like heavier rain than usual. Then I heard a heavy thump on the roof. Pretty soon we were under fire. I figured my van would be a golf ball in the morning, with lots of dimples from the large hail. I decided to head outside to collect some of the larger pieces of hail but had to protect myself with my scooter helmet. My wife thinks that the photo of me in my helmet looks like I escaped from a mental hospital.

That picture seriously cracks me up!
The hail was so loud and scary. I thought we would have holes in our roof or a broken window by the time the storm was over

You totally need to be committed. That looks totally scary! I would have died.

Oh, and Shaun thinks your title is pretty clever.

I like the title too. And you did escape from a mental hospital, didn't you?
Did your van get dented? Scary.

That is some serious hail. I remember how fun they were when I was little, but we never had hail like that!

why people move to places like oklahoma is beyond me!:)

we had 98 degrees today. spent the afternoon at the pool with the kids. i can't relate to jackets, let alone hail storms. but i do wish we had thunder and lightening more often around these parts.

To all of you, playing in the hail is not different than riding a skateboard in gravel. Bet Scooter has done that.

Living with this weather is what makes the normally hot and humid boring days tolerable. To know that that night I might get to enjoy a show is the closest equivalent to looking forward to the ocean breeze to cool off those hot L.A. days, except it is like being at Disneyland during the Mainstreet Electrical Parade.

Freak!! I mean the hail, not you ... well okay, I mean you too. We hear the loud thumping on the roof too, but dang! We didn't get hail that big. The biggest we saw were half that size!!

I'm worried about your van, was it okay?

I'm with Michal on this one.
We spent the day at the beach on Friday, took Scotty swimming in the pool on Saturday, and ate an outdoor picnic lunch on Sunday.
You're living in the WRONG place

Wow, that is some serious hail. I love all the weather YOU have. I wish we had more thunderstorms.

Dork! and I do mean you. At least you had the right equipment to be out in the "weather". :)

Guess we moved at the right time! That's by far the biggest hail that's fallen on that street in the last 4 years. Love the helmet =)

I didn't just read this - just decided to prove I look at your blog as often as your wife's.
Native Californians are mesmerized by weather and running water. I still think a river is a freak of nature.

Nana- if it makes you feel better, I look at my wife's blog more than my own too. Usually because she makes me. . .

I think the helmet idea was brilliant. I always had to wear one in the institution and I never got hurt by hail...but I did crash my skateboard on some gravel once or twice.
